वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन आणि देव

 

 

आईन्स्टाईन हा गोष्टी समजून घेण्यासाठी इतक्या चपखल आणि सोप्या संकल्पना वापरतो की बस्स. आईन्स्टाईन म्हणतो की जगातील एकूण एक पवित्र मानले गेलेले धर्मग्रंथ हे फक्त आणि फक्त मनोरंजनात्मक आणि अवास्तव अशा बालबुद्धीच्या कथांनी भरून पडले आहेत. त्यांना खरे मानणे वा त्यांवर विश्वास ठेवणे हे केवळ बालिशबुद्धी असलेल्या माणसांचेच काम होय. आईन्स्टाईनच्या या वक्तव्याचा विचार केला तर खरेच पटते की, पंख असलेली माणसे, अर्धा माणूस अर्धा प्राणी असलेली पात्रे, प्राण्यांच्या पोटी जन्मास येणारी माणसे किंवा माणसांच्या पोटी जन्मणारे प्राणी, माणसांची भाषा बोलणारे पशुपक्षी, मरून पुन्हा जिवंत होणारे लोक, अचानक अदृश्य होणारे लोक, पाण्यावरून पायी चालणारे लोक, हवेत उडणारे लोक, लैंगिक संबंधाविना नुसत्या प्रार्थना वा आशीर्वादाने जन्मणारे लोक, स्वर्ग-नरक ह्या अशा निर्बुद्ध गोष्टींनी जगातले तमाम पवित्र धर्मग्रंथ भरून पडले आहेत. मग विचार करा की या अशा बालिश कथांना खरे मानणारे, त्याच्यासाठी दुसऱ्या माणसांशी लढणारे लोक हे मूर्ख नव्हेत तर अन्य काय?
ही वरची सगळी बालिश कृत्ये करणाऱ्या पात्रांना देव असे म्हणण्यात येते. आणि देव हीच संकल्पना माणसाच्या संपूर्ण इतिहासात त्याच्या प्रगतीस एकंदर सर्वाधिक बाधित ठरली आहे. म्हणजे कसे? तर माणसाला अत्यंत कुशल क्षमतेचा मेंदू तर मिळाला, मात्र देव या संकल्पनेने त्याला चिकित्सा आणि औत्सुक्य, विवेकपूर्ण विचार, तर्कबुद्धी या मौल्यवान गुणांपासून दूर ठेवले, जेणेकरून या मेंदूचा उपयोग त्याला योग्य रीतीने करताच आला नाही. म्हणजे असे की, माणसाला पाऊस का पडतो, आजार का होतात, सूर्य का उगवतो? विजा का चमकतात, बियातून झाड का उगवते, एका प्राण्याच्या पोटी तोच प्राणी का जन्माला येतो, माणसे अकाली का मरतात हे आणि असे कित्येक प्रश्न लाखो वर्षांपासून पडत राहीले. पण या सर्वप्रश्नांचे उत्तर म्हणून हे सगळे देव करतो हे अत्यंत सुमार परंतु चपखल कारण मान्य केल्यामुळे त्याच्या बुद्धीला पुढे या आणि अशा इतर प्रश्नांवर विचार करण्याची, तर्काधारित, विवेकपूर्ण कारणे शोधण्याची गरजच पडली नाही. आणि त्यामुळे बहुतांश काळ मानवी आयुष्य हे एखाद्या साचलेल्या दुर्गंधी डबक्यासारखे अप्रवाही बनून राहिले. केवळ एक वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन नसल्याने माणसाच्या लाखो पिढ्या देव या सुमार संकल्पनेच्या प्रभावाखाली एका अत्यंत मर्यादित अशा कुपमंडूकासारख्या जीवनशैलीत खितपत पडल्या. उदाहरणार्थ एखादा आजार का झाला? याला जर तो देवाच्या कोपामुळे झाला हे उत्तर मान्य केले की मग आजाराची नेमकी कारणे शोधणे, त्यावर इलाज शोधणे, आजार टाळण्याच्या उपायांचा विचार, अभ्यास करणे या सगळ्या क्रिया आपोआप रद्दबातल होतात. आजार होणे वा तो बरे होणे हे देवावर सोपवल्याने माणसे इलाज शोधण्याच्या कामी निरुद्योगी राहून मागच्या लाखो पिढ्यांत प्रचंड प्रमाणात नाहक मरत राहीली आहेत. माणसाची आज जी काही प्रगती झाली आहे ती देव या संकल्पनेला छेद देण्यापासूनच सुरु झाली आहे. आग का लागते? तर देव लावत असेल म्हणून आग लागते या विचारातून बाहेर पडून गारगोट्या घासून माणसालाही आग निर्माण करता येते ही जाणीव होणे हा मानवी प्रगतीचा अत्यंत महत्वाचा टप्पा ठरतो. आग ही माणसाच्या कंट्रोल मध्ये न येता एक दैवी गोष्टच राहीली असती तर आपण काहीच प्रगती करू शकलो नसतो. देव आणि प्रगती हे म्हणूनच एकमेकांना म्युच्युअली एक्स्क्लुडेड आहेत. देव प्रभावी असला की प्रगती खुंटणार आणि देव कमजोर झाला की प्रगती वाढणार हेच खरे आहे. कुठेतरी आपल्यासाठी अतर्क्य असणाऱ्या गोष्टींचे कारण वा कारक हा देव आहे हा संस्कार मनात ठेवल्यामुळे आपली तर्क आणि विचारांची पातळी एक मर्यादा ओलांडू शकत नाही. आणि गंमत म्हणजे हेही खरे आहे की इतिहासात ज्यांना कळले की देवबिव काही नसते, त्यांनी देव या संकल्पनेचा अत्यंत चतुराईने वापर करून इतरांवर त्याच देवाची भीती घालून विनासायास राज्य केले.

आपण भारतीय लोक हे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान आहोत असे मानतो, आणि ते खोटेही नाही. पण तरीही एक सीव्ही रामन सोडले तर अजून एकही विज्ञान नोबेल आपण मिळवू शकलो नाही. का? तर माझ्या मते तरी देव, कर्म, अध्यात्म, धर्मग्रंथ या आणि अशा अनेक भ्रामक समजुती आणि संस्कारांनी आपण नकळत स्वतःस मर्यादित करून ठेवले आहे. म्हणून वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन अंगी बाणविण्याची आणि चाकोरीबाहेरचा तर्कशुद्ध विचार करण्याची आपली क्षमता ही त्या अनेक भ्रामक गोष्टींच्या पगड्याखाली मर्यादितच राहते. अर्थात केवळ नोबेल मिळविणे हाच वैज्ञानिक प्रगतीचा निकष आहे असे माझे म्हणणे नाही, आणि याचे स्पष्टीकरणही मी पुढे देतच आहे.

 
वाईट गोष्ट ही की आहे की मानवाने अगदी इवल्याशा काळात वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोनाचा वापर करून इतकी देदीप्यमान प्रगती करूनही आजही अगदी शिक्षित लोकांच्याही मानेवरून देव या तद्दन खोट्या आणि बालिश संकल्पनेचे जोखड उतरले नाहीय. अशा गोष्टींचेही स्पष्टीकरण आईन्स्टाईन अत्यंत हुशारीने देतो. आईन्स्टाईन सांगतो की well educated आणि well trained यात जो फरक आहे तोच शिकून वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन बाळगणाऱ्या आणि न बाळगणाऱ्या लोकांत आहे. म्हणजे कसे की तुम्ही एखाद्या कुत्र्याला वा सर्कशीतील प्राण्याला जर trained केले तर तो अतिशय चित्तथरारक अशा कसरती लीलया करू शकतो. मात्र तो well trained असलेला कुत्रा वा प्राणी एखाद्या वैज्ञानिक आणि विवेकपूर्ण प्रश्नावर मात्र अजिबात विचार करू शकत नाही. याचप्रमाणे अत्यंत उच्च शिक्षण घेतलेले परंतु तरीही देव वा इतर कोणत्याही भ्रामक संकल्पनांना शिरोधार्य मानणारे लोक हे त्या well trained कुत्र्या वा सर्कशीतील प्राण्यांहून काहीही वेगळे ठरत नाहीत. एखाद्या क्षेत्रात वा एखाद्या विषयात असे लोक अगदी अतोनात प्राविण्य मिळवू शकतात, पण सारासार विवेकबुद्धी वा वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन आणि त्यातून येणारी चाकोरीबाहेरचा विचार करायला लावणारी कल्पकता त्यांच्याकडे नसल्याने एका मर्यादेबाहेर ते प्रगती करू शकत नाहीत.

समजा एक संपूर्ण देशात टॉप मारलेला इंजिनियर आहे, तर त्याने टॉप मारले म्हणून तो well educated झाला असे नव्हे. तर त्याने त्या क्षेत्रात इतरांनी पूर्वीच केलेल्या कामात अत्यंत अधिक प्राविण्य मिळविले आहे एवढाच त्याचा अर्थ होतो. तो well educated झाला असे तेव्हाच म्हणता येईल जेव्हा तो त्याला शिकविलेल्या गोष्टींच्याही पलीकडे जाऊन, त्याच्या जुन्या संकल्पनांच्या मर्यादेच्या बाहेर जाऊन विज्ञाननिष्ठ विचार करून त्याच्या क्षेत्रात अजून वेगळी आणि नवी मौलिक भर टाकू शकेल. आपण well trained तर होतो पण well educated होत नाही म्हणून नवनिर्मिती किंवा एखादी अगदी जगावेगळी, विस्मयकारी कन्सेप्ट जन्माला घालू शकत नाही. आपली शैक्षणिक व्यवस्था आपल्याला फक्त well trained बनवते. किंबहुना आपण कदाचित जगातील सर्वात श्रेष्ठ well trained माणसे बनवू शकतो. पण यामुळे आपण पूर्वीच्याच गोष्टी अजून थोड्या मॉडिफाय करणे अथवा आधीच्या स्ट्रॅटेजीत थोडा वेगळा एप्रोच घेणे याबाहेर काहीही करत नाही. अर्थात हेही प्रगतीच्या दृष्टीने एक पुढचे छोटेसे पाऊल असले तरी आपल्या वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोनातील मर्यादेमुळे आपल्याकडून अगदी ग्राउंडब्रेकिंग म्हणता येईल अशी कामे घडत नाहीत हेच सत्य आहे. म्हणजे आपण वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोनात अगदी शून्य आहोत असेही नाही, पण आपण फक्त एका सेफ आणि सोयीस्कर अशा लिमिटपर्यंतच वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन बाळगतो. तो पूर्ण स्वतःत भिनवत नाही. 

वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन हा फक्त विज्ञान याच विषयाशी संबंधित नव्हे. इतिहास, कला, भाषा, व्यवसाय, राजकारण इतकेच काय तर धर्मासहीत प्रत्येक क्षेत्रात वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन हा बेस्ट आऊटपुट देऊ शकतो. कोणत्याही गोष्टीची चिकित्सा करणे ती तर्क, विवेक आणि विज्ञानाच्या कसोटीवर पारखून घेणे, प्रत्येक दाव्यावर प्रश्न उपस्थित करून विवेक आणि तर्काच्या निकषांवर त्याची उत्तरे अथवा उद्देश तपासून पाहून मगच ते स्वीकारणे म्हणजे वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन. ग्रंथप्रामाण्य, व्यक्तिप्रामाण्य, पूर्वग्रह हे नाकारणे म्हणजे वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन होय. ग्रंथप्रामाण्य म्हणजे कोणत्याही ग्रंथात वा पुस्तकात लिहिले आहे म्हणून त्यास सत्य मानने. यात फक्त धर्मग्रंथ येतात असे नव्हे, तर अगदी विज्ञानाच्या पुस्तकांतही जे लिहिले आहे ते शतप्रतिशत खरेच आहे असे मानण्यालाही वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन नकार देतो. धर्मग्रंथ असो, राजकीय ग्रंथ असो वा अगदी वैज्ञानिक जर्नल असो, त्यांना पवित्र वा श्रेष्ठ मानून जसेच्या तसे न स्विकारता त्यातील प्रत्येक गोष्ट बुद्धीच्या, तर्काच्या आणि विवेकाच्या कसोटीवर पारखून घेणे म्हणजे ग्रंथप्रामाण्य नाकारणे होय. याचप्रमाणे कोणा मोठ्या धर्मगुरूने, धर्मसंस्थापकाने, नेत्याने, देवाने, देवाच्या पुत्राने, देवाच्या प्रेषिताने किंवा एखाद्या सर्वश्रेष्ठ शास्त्रज्ञाने जरी एखादी गोष्ट सांगितली असेल तरीही ती आदरापोटी वा श्रद्धेपोटी वा भीतीपोटी जशीच्या तशी न स्विकारता तर्क आणि बुद्धीच्या कसोटीवर तपासून घेणे म्हणजे व्यक्तिप्रामाण्य नाकारणे होय. कुठलाही पूर्वग्रह न बाळगता, भावनांचा पगडा न ठेवता तथ्यांवर विचार करणे म्हणजे वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन. बुद्धिप्रामाण्य म्हणजे वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन. समजा एखादा माणूस इतिहासाचा अभ्यास करत आहे, मग जर त्याने आधीच ठरवले असले की अमुक राजा चांगला आणि अमुक राजा वाईट तर तो कधीही जे सत्य आहे ते शोधू शकणार नाही. कारण त्याच्या मनात एक पूर्वग्रह आहे. याचप्रमाणे आपला आणि परका ही भावना मनात ठेवून कुणाचीही वा कशाचीही तुलना केली तर तीही चुकीचीच ठरेल. थोडक्यात काय तर बुद्धिप्रामाण्य स्वीकारणे, आणि ग्रंथप्रामाण्य, व्यक्तिप्रामाण्य नाकारणे, पूर्वग्रह त्यागणे म्हणजेच well trained ची सीमा ओलांडून well educated होणे होय.  
 
आजच्या जमान्यातही सर्वदूर आढळणारी अत्यंत खेदाची गोष्ट ही की बाकी तर सोडाच पण अगदी वैज्ञानिक क्षेत्रातील कित्येक माणसेदेखील पूर्णपणे वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन बाळगत नाहीत जेणेकरून ते ही well trained ची सीमा ओलांडून well educated हा दर्जा गाठू शकत नाहीत. देव किंवा इतर अनेक भ्रामक संस्कारांतून ते बाहेर येऊ शकत नाहीत आणि त्यायोगे ते नकळत स्वतःलाच मर्यादा घालून घेतात. जरी एखाद्या तंत्रज्ञान वा विज्ञानाच्या क्षेत्रात असे लोक अतिशय प्रवीण असले तरीही त्यांच्या मानसिकतेत कुठेतरी आत देव ही अवैज्ञानिक आणि असत्य संकल्पना प्रभाव टाकत असल्याने ते एका मर्यादेबाहेरचा विचार करू शकत नाहीत हे खरेच आहे. अर्थात वर सांगितल्याप्रमाणे ही well trained आणि well educated ची सीमा अधोरेखित करणारी फक्त देव ही एकमेव संकल्पना नाही. अनेक पूर्वग्रह, मर्यादित विचार, संकुचित वृत्ती असे इतरही खूप कारक आहेत. एवढेच की देव हा या सगळ्यांपैकी सर्वाधिक प्रभावी आणि सर्वाधिक सार्वत्रिक असलेला कारक आहे.

मागे पुण्याच्या मेटेरॉलॉजी डिपार्टमेंटच्या मुख्य वैज्ञानिक असलेल्या एका शास्त्रज्ञ स्त्रीने नाही का पितरांचे जेवण दुसऱ्या जातीच्या स्त्रीने बनवल्यामुळे ते बाटले म्हणून पोलीस तक्रार केली होती. पहीली गोष्ट म्हणजे शास्त्रज्ञ असूनही पितर श्राद्ध वगैरे घालणे आणि त्यातही एका विशिष्ट जातीच्या व्यक्तीने त्याचा स्वयंपाक केला म्हणून ते बाटले असा ग्रह करणे हे दोन्ही विचार चूक किंबहुना शुद्ध भंकसच होत. पण मुख्य शास्त्रज्ञ असूनही त्या मॅडम या well trained आणि well educated ची सीमा ओलांडू शकल्या नाहीत. मागे एका भारतीय वंशाच्या नासात काम करणाऱ्या स्त्रीने आपल्या डेस्कवर कोणत्यातरी देवतांचा फोटो असल्याचे पोस्ट केले होते. एका हायकोर्ट जजने वक्तव्य दिले होते की सेक्स केल्याने नव्हे तर मोराचे अश्रू पिऊन लांडोर गर्भवती होते. आपल्या आरबीआयच्या एका गव्हर्नरने तर अय्यपाच्या अवकृपेमुळेच केरळात पूर आला असेल का याची शक्यता कोर्टाने पडताळून पहायला हवी असे बोलले होते. म्हणजे पहा ना, हे सगळे लोक अत्यंत उच्च शिक्षित आणि त्या त्या क्षेत्रात सर्वाधिक प्राविण्य मिळवून अगदी टॉपला पोचलेले लोक आहेत, दोन जणी तर शास्त्रज्ञ आहेत, आणि तरीही हे सगळे लोक अशी निरर्थक निर्बुद्ध वक्तव्ये, कामे करतात. याचे कारण म्हणजे वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोनाचा अभाव आणि well trained ची सीमा ओलांडून well educated होण्यातली त्यांची असमर्थता होय. आता यावर देव आणि इतर धार्मिक अंधश्रद्धांच्या समर्थनार्थ अनेक लोक बाबा बुवांच्या दारी जाणारे डॉ. अब्दुल कलाम आणि स्वप्नात येऊन देवीने गणित सांगितले असे म्हणणारे रामानुजन यांची उदाहरणे देतात. पण दुर्दैवाने हेच म्हणावे लागेल की या दोघांचे त्यांच्या क्षेत्रातील प्राविण्य अत्यंत अलौकिक होते यात काही वादच नाही, मात्र माणूस एका क्षेत्रात खूप प्रवीण असला म्हणून तो माणूस इतरही प्रत्येक क्षेत्रात आदर्शच असेल नाही. म्हणून त्यांच्या क्षेत्रात अत्यंत प्रवीण असले तरी अब्दुल कलाम हे बाबा बुवांच्या समोर लीन होणे या कृतीत सपशेल चूकच ठरतात (तू कोण मोठा टिक्कोजीराव?असा मला प्रश्न विचारला जाणे क्रमप्राप्तच आहे. पण एखादा कोणी मोठा टिक्कोजीराव नाही म्हणून जे चूक आहे त्याला चूक म्हणण्यास तो लायक नाही असे थोडेच आहे?). आणि रामानुजन यांचीही स्वतःच्या खालावत्या प्रकृतीबद्दलची काळजी आणि ढासळता आत्मविश्वास, यामुळे त्यांनी दैवी गोष्टींमध्ये आधार शोधणे ही मानसिकता अधोरेखित होते. तसेही आपल्या कामाला दैवी गोष्टीची वा पावित्र्याची जोड दिली की त्याचे महत्व वाढते आणि चिकित्सा कमी होते हे जे तमाम धर्मसंस्थापकांनी वापरलेले तंत्र आहे त्याचा मोह रामानुजन यांनाही झाला असल्याची शक्यता कशी नाकारायची? आणि खरेतर हे दोघेही सोडा, देव वा इतरही आपली वैचारिक मर्यादा अत्यंत संक्षिप्त ठेवणारे भ्रम, पूर्वग्रह  यापासून अगदी नोबेल विजेते शास्त्रज्ञदेखील वाचू शकलेले नाहीत. आजपर्यंत अनेकांना दोन दोन नोबेल पारितोषिके मिळाली आहेत, पण या दोनपैकी एकतरी नोबेल हे सहसा विभागून एकापेक्षा जास्त व्यक्तींना दिलेले नोबेल असते. मात्र दोन्ही नोबेल पारितोषिके ही एखाद्या व्यक्तीला एकट्यालाच मिळाली असा जगात फक्त एकच शास्त्रज्ञ आहे. तो शास्त्रज्ञ म्हणजे लायनस पाउलींग होय. तर पाउलींग याला सुद्धा विशेषतः व्हिटॅमिन सी बद्दल असाच एक भ्रम होता (आता करोना काळातही या व्हिटॅमिन सी वर लोकांची खूप मर्जी जडली होती). पाउलींगचा क्लेम होता की त्याला जी लाइफलॉंन्ग सर्दी होती त्यावर व्हिटॅमिन सी हा अत्यंत बिनतोड इलाज होता. म्हणून त्याने व्हिटॅमिन सी चे अत्याधिक सेवन केले, आणि त्याने आपली सर्दी बरी होत असल्याचाही दावा केला. पण अर्थातच व्हिटॅमिन सी ने सर्दी बरी होत नाही हे आता सिद्ध झाले आहे, मात्र पाउलींग उगीचच आयुष्यभर हा एक भ्रम उराशी बाळगून राहीला. तेच जर त्याने असा कोणताही पूर्वग्रह न बाळगता सर्दीवर काम केले असते तर कदाचित एखादे अत्यंत प्रभावी औषध शोधूही शकला असता. आता दोन वैयक्तिक नोबेल पुरस्कार मिळविणाऱ्या एकमेव महान शास्त्रज्ञाचीही एखाद्या अवैज्ञानिक वा पूर्वाग्रही भ्रमापायी जर ही स्थिती होती तर इतर कुणाची काय व्यथा.
 
आमची भक्तीभावना आहे तर तुला ती दुखावण्याचा वा खोटी ठरविण्याचा अधिकार कुणी दिला? हा वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन आणि देव यांच्या कॉन्फ्लिक्टमधला सर्वात पॉप्युलर प्रतिरोध (किंवा त्या व्यक्तीच्या स्वतःच्या प्रगतीसाठी अवरोधच) आहे. तर्काधारित प्रतिवाद उरला नाही की मग भावनांचे दुखावणे समोर आणले जाते. किंवा फक्त आमचेच का दिसते? अमक्याचे नाही दिसत का? अशी व्हाटअबौटरी केली जाते. आमचे आम्ही पाहून घेऊ तुला जशी काशी करायची ती कर आम्हाला लै ग्यान देऊ नको असे लोक सर्रास बोलताना आढळतात. अनेक लोक असेही म्हणतात की आमची तर श्रद्धा आहे, अंधश्रद्धा नाही. आणि अंधश्रद्धा इज रॉंग, बट श्रद्धा इज करेक्ट. पण खरेतर प्रत्येक श्रद्धा ही अंधश्रद्धाच असते. ज्या गोष्टी वैज्ञानिक वा इतर कायदेशीर पुराव्यांनी सिद्ध करता येत नाहीत तरीही त्या खऱ्या आहेत असे मानने म्हणजेच श्रद्धा. मग अंधश्रद्धा काय वेगळी असते? जी तर्काधारित चिकित्सेला घाबरते ती श्रद्धा ही अंधश्रद्धाच होय, किंबहुना श्रद्धा आणि अंधश्रद्धा या वेगळ्या गोष्टी नाहीतच.

नव्या युगात आपल्या मानसिकतेत परिवर्तन येत आहे, मात्र त्याचा वेग कमी आहे. आपल्यातील बहुसंख्यांनी परिवर्तनाचा मार्ग अंशतः स्वीकारला असला तरी तो अगदी थोडासाच पादाक्रांत केला आहे. त्यामुळे होते काय की आपण अनेक बाबतींत विज्ञानवादी आहोत वा वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन बाळगून आहोत हे सिद्ध करण्यासाठी लोकांकडे भरपूर अनुभव वा उदाहरणे असतात. मात्र खरेच बुद्धीची कसोटी पाहणाऱ्या काही बाबींत त्यांची भावना आणि बुद्धी यांच्यात कोण श्रेष्ठ आहे ते दाखविणारी मर्यादा अधिक स्पष्टपणे अधोरेखित होते. ही धोबी का कुत्ता ना घर का ना घाट का अवस्था असलेले आपल्या आजूबाजूला कोट्यवधी लोक आहेत, ज्यांना कुठेतरी देव वा इतर भ्रामक गोष्टी या अस्तित्वात नाहीत याची जाणीव तर असते पण कुठल्याशा अनामिक भीतीने वा संकोचाने वा ओढीने वा सामाजिक दबाव आणि वैयक्तिक भावनांपोटी ते हे पूर्णपणे स्वीकारण्यास तयार होत नाहीत. आणि म्हणून ते एखाद्या क्षेत्रात अतिशय प्रवीण झाले तरी त्यांच्या कक्षा अरुंदच राहतात. ते पूर्ण वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोनाच्या अमर्याद व्याप्तीची अनुभूती आणि फायदा घेऊ शकत नाहीत. व्यक्तिप्रामाण्य, ग्रंथप्रामाण्य, पूर्वग्रह नाकारून आणि तर्क व बुद्धिप्रामाण्य स्वीकारूनच आपण वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोनावर खरे उतरू शकतो. पारंपरिक परिप्रेक्ष्यातील उदाहरण द्यायचे तर आपल्या भारतीय तत्वज्ञानात मोक्ष ही जीवनाच्या अंतिम ध्येयप्राप्तीची अवस्था सांगितली आहे. ती जशी इहलोकाच्या एकूण एका मोहाचा म्हणजे अगदी देह आणि प्राण याही मोहांचा त्याग केल्याशिवाय प्राप्त होत नाही असे सांगितले जाते, तसेच वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन ही अवस्था देखील देव, धर्म वा इतरही सारे अवैज्ञानिक, अतार्किक भ्रम आणि पूर्वग्रह यांचे स्वतःतून समूळ उच्चाटन केल्याशिवाय पूर्णतः प्राप्त होत नाही.

Einstein uses really simple and straightforward concepts to understand things. Einstein says that the all the scriptures, which are considered to be the holiest in the world, are filled only with mere entertaining and unrealistic childish stories. Believing them to be true or believing them itself is only the job of people with childish intellect. Considering Einstein's statement, isnt it true that these scripture contain totally fake and imaginary characters like people with wings, half human half animal characters, human beings born to animals and vice versa, animals that speak human language, people who die and come back to life, people who suddenly become invisible? Aren't all the holy scriptures in the world filled with such ignorant things as people walking on water, people flying in the air, people being born with mere prayers or blessings without sexual intercourse? Aren't these things totally childish? Then tell me if the people who believe these childish stories to be true, who fight for them with other people are completely fool or not?
The characters who do all the above mentioned childish deeds are called gods. And the very concept of God has been the biggest obstacle to man's progress throughout world history. Man got a brain of highly skilled ability, but the concept of God kept him away from valuable qualities like curiosity, rational thinking, reasoning, so that he could not use this brain properly. See, why does it rain, why do people get sick, why does the sun rise? Why lightning flashes, why a tree grows from a seed, why the same animal is born from the womb of the same species, why people die prematurely and so many other questions have been appearing in human mind for millions of years. However a fake but well fitting answer to all these questions was that God does all this. So when this answer or cause i.e. god is accepted, there is no need for humans to come forward and think of such questions, to find rational, rational reasons behind them. And so for most of the time, human life has remained like a stinking puddle. In the absence of scientific approach, millions of generations of human beings have been influenced by the concept of God to live a very limited Kupmanduk-like lifestyle. For example, why does a disease occur? If the accepted answer to this is that it is due to God's wrath, then there remains no question of all the activities like finding the exact cause of the disease, finding a cure for it, and thinking of ways to prevent that disease. As it has been entrusted to God to cure or cause a disease, millions of people have died unnecessarily in the past.
The progress that man has made today begins with breaking the concept of God. Why does a fire start? The answer was, its god who creates it. Thus it is the first and a very important stage of human progress to realize that even a human being can create fire by rubbing pebbles, and that its not the god who controls it. If fire had remained a divine thing without coming under the control of man, we would not have been able to make any progress. So god and progress are therefore mutually excluding to each other. It is true that progress will stunt when god is effective and progress will increase when god is weak. Thinking in backdrop of our mind that god is the cause or creator of things that seem unexplainable to us, we can not raise our level of reasoning and thinking beyond a certain limit. And the funny part is that it is also true that those who knew in history that god is non-existing, used this concept of god very cleverly for their own benefit and ruled other people by instilling fear of the same god in them.
We Indians think that we are very intelligent, and that is not incorrect too. But if we leave CV Raman, we have not won a single science Nobel since independence. Why? In my opinion, it is because we have unknowingly limited ourselves by unreal concepts like god, karma, spirituality, scriptures and so many other misleading beliefs and rites. Our ability to adopt a scientific approach and to think rationally outside the tradition has been limited under the guise of many such misconceptions.
The bad thing is that even though mankind has made such glorious progress using scientific approach, even today, the yoke of this totally false and childish concept of god has not come down from the necks of even the most educated people. Einstein cleverly explains such things too. Einstein says that the difference between being well-educated and being well-trained is the same as that between people who have a scientific approach to learning and those who do not. This means that if we train a dog or a circus animal, it can master and display very exciting athletic stunts. However, such a well-trained dog or animal cannot think of even the simplest of a scientific or rational question. Similarly, people who are highly educated but still believe in god or any other deceptive concept are no different from those well-trained dogs or circus animals. Such people may be very proficient in some field or a subject, but they cannot progress beyond a certain limit because they do not have the common sense or the scientific approach and the ingenuity to think outside the box.

Suppose that there is a top-ranked engineer in the whole country. He did not automatically become well-educated just because he hit the top. It just means that he has become very proficient in the work already done by others in that field. He can be said to be well educated only when he can go beyond what he has been taught, go beyond the limits of his old concepts, think scientifically and logically and add more different and new fundamentals to his field. If we are well trained but not well educated, then a genuine innovation or a very different, wonderful concept cannot take birth in our minds. Our educational system only makes us well trained, not well educated. In fact, we can make the best well-trained people in the world. But it does nothing more than just modifying the previous technologies or take a slightly different approach to the previous strategy. Of course, even though this also is a small step forward to progress, the truth is that due to the limitations of our scientific approach, we are not able to do any groundbreaking work. This does not mean that we are completely zero in on the scientific approach, but we only have the scientific approach to a safe and convenient limit. It has not reached deep into our roots.

It is a pity that even today, many people even in the field of science cannot cross the line of well trained and reach the level of well educated. They cannot get out of god or many other deceptive concepts, and thus they unknowingly limit themselves. Even if such people are very proficient in field of technology or science, it is true that they cannot think beyond a certain limit because the concept of god is influencing and limiting them somewhere in their psyche. Of course, god is not the only concept that underlines the boundaries of well-trained and well-educated. There are many other factors, such as prejudices, illogic, limited thinking etc. However, god is the most effective and most universal of all these factors.

A couple of years before, a woman scientist, who is the chief scientist of the Pune Meteorology Department, had lodged a complaint with the police alleging that her PITAR SHRAADDHA meal was made by a woman of lower caste and hence it got cursed. The first thing is that despite being a scientist, to perform PITAR SHRAADDHA etc, and to assume that it got cursed or spoiled because of being cooked by a certain caste person, was itself both a mistake and a utter non-sense. Despite being the chief scientist, she could not cross the line of well-trained and well-educated. Didn't a High Court judge state that female peacock gets pregnant not by having sex but by drinking peacock tears? Did not one of our RBI governors had said that the court should look into the possibility of floods in Kerala due to Ayyappa's humiliation? You see, all these people are highly educated and have reached to the top with the highest proficiency in their field. And yet they make such nonsensical statements. This is only due to their lack of scientific approach and their inability to cross the boundaries of being well trained and well educated. Now many people give the examples of Abdul Kalam who used to lean ahead of many babas, swamis etc and of Ramanujan who used to say that it was a goddess who used to come in his dreams and taught him mathematics. Unfortunately, there is no doubt that the proficiency of these two legends in their field was unmatchably superior, but being very proficient in one field, doesn't make the man ideal in every other field, isn't it? So even though Abdul Kalam was most proficient in his field, it is a mistake for him to bow in front of babas and swamis (Yes, I know I am nothing in front of Dr. Kalam, but it doen't need to be very great to realise what is wrong and whats not, isn't it?). Also Ramanujan's concern for his own degenerating health and declining self-confidence enforced him to find some support in the divine. We can not deny that Ramanujan was also tempted by the technique used by most of the founders of most religions to increase the importance of their work and avoid criticism by adding divine values or holiness to their work?
Its not just Dr. Kalam and Ramanujan, even many of the Nobel winning scientists were unable escape many misconcepts or prejudices like god. To date, many people have won two Nobel Prizes, but at least one of these two Nobel Prizes has usually been awarded to more than one individual. But there is only one scientist in the world who has won two Nobel Prizes, both individual. That scientist is Linus Pauling (it may be noted that the second Nobel was not for a scientific discovery). Pauling had a misconception about vitamin C in particular (people were very fond of vitamin C even in the Corona period now). Pauling's claim was that vitamin C was the ultimate cure for the lifelong cold he had. So he consumed a lot of vitamin C, and also claimed that his cold was getting better with it. However, it has now been proven that vitamin C does not cure colds, but Pauling however carried this misconcept throughout his life. Had he not have any such misconcept and had worked on the cold without any such prejudice, who knows he might have found a very effective medicine for the disease. So, if the only great scientist to win two individual Nobel Prizes had an unscientific or prejudiced delusion, what a pity for anyone else.

This is our devotion, who gave you the right to hurt it or deny it? This is the most popular resistance (or obstacle to one's own progress) during a conflict between the scientific approach and god. When there is no logical argument left, people draw this weapon of hurted feelings. Many people also claim that we have faith, not superstition. They also say that superstition is wrong, but faith is correct. However in fact, faith itself is also a superstition. Faith is the belief that things that cannot be proved by scientific or other legal evidence are true. Thats exactly what a superstition too is. So how is superstition different from faith? In fact both faith and superstition are indeed one and the same thing.

Change is certainly taking place in the world. Majority of us have even stepped towards progress and have reached much further on the path of scientific approach. So what happens is that most people have a lot of experience or examples to prove that they have scientific approach in many respects. But when it comes to certain things that really test the intellect and rational ability, their emotions get better of their intellect. There are many people who are aware that god or other deceptive things do not exist, but they are not ready to accept it fully out of some anonymous fear or hesitation or social pressure or personal prejudices. In our Indian philosophy, MOKSHA is the ultimate goal of life. Just as it is said that MOKSHA is not achieved without giving up even the desire of body and life itself, so do the scientific approach too is not achieved without eradicating god or all other unscientific irrational misconcepts and prejudices from oneself.
